He married Emma Elizabeth Skeens on April 10, 1920 in Paola, Kansas. When he was 19 and living in Kansas, he decided he wanted to join the troops that were heading overseas to fight in World War I. However, when he went to get on the train it was announced that the war was over. Lloyd worked for Texas Oil in Kansas and was eventually transferred to Salem, Illinois, where he moved his young family. When they moved to Salem the town was so crowded from the oil boom that people were sleeping on resident's porches.
