Round Oak School, Garnett, Kansas

The Round Oak School, also referred to as Growlerville, was a one room schoolhouse located near Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas. According to the 1901 plat map below, the school was located near the property of my family, the Hawley's. A representation of a schoolhouse and the number 91 (for district) identify the location of the school on the map. Jay Hawley, who lived nearby, served on the school board as clerk, and his daughter, Nellie, who attended the school, became a teacher there. Most of the Hawley children attended this school including, Opal, Cecil, Esther, Lloyd, Keith, Donald, Faye, and Russel.

The following articles provide a glimpse into daily life at the schoolhouse, however, its origins are not known. Upon visiting the location of the school in 2019, I found the original concrete foundation. Once an open area, a century later, it is now a forest.
