Trinity M.E. Church, South, Rochelle, Florida

P. Marlin 2016 and 2021

The small community of Rochelle, Florida was first called Perry Junction and grew up around the site of the plantation of Madison Starke Perry, Governor of Florida 1857-61. The town was renamed Gruelle in 1881 and changed to Rochelle in 1884 in honor of the parents of Governor Perry's wife, Martha Perry.

According to a document from Florida Memory, the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, South, of Rochelle was established in 1876. The first services were held in private homes and a log schoolhouse. The present building (photos below), with cornerstone and art glass windows, was erected and dedicated in 1890. The first pastor was Rev. R.D. Gentry, 1876-1877.

In 1890, Rochelle resident, William Tillman, helped build the historic Rochelle Methodist Church. Tillman raised his family near the church, and his daughter, Claudie Hogan, was married there. In 1942, Tillman died and his funeral was held at the church. About 1943, the church doors were closed and the sanctuary hasn’t been used since.

A visit in fall 2021 indicated that improvements were being made to the church.
