P. Marlin May 2014
The year was 1960. A British rock band known as the Beatles had formed in England, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon squared off in the first televised presidential debate, the average price of a gallon of gas was $.31 and my parents got married.
It was not an easy courtship, my mom’s mom (my grandmother) became increasing hostile to my parent's relationship. She eventually bought a gun and threatened my Dad. My parents then had to decide, go their separate ways or get married?
Having decided to marry, they made plans for a wedding. At the time, Florida law required parental consent for those under 21 years of age (mom was 18 with a non consenting parent). They were eventually married on May 30, 1964 but not before they had to document my mom crossing the Florida/Georgia line so my grandmother did not think that my dad kidnapped her.
It was on a recent trip with my parents that we were able to stop and visit the church in Brunswick, Georgia, they were married in 50 years ago. Still a church, the building has seen many changes over the years, but we were able to find distinguishing marks from the original 1960's sanctuary (above photo).
