P. Marlin June 2014
Mary Surratt would hang on July 7, 1865, for her part in the conspiracy to kill Abraham Lincoln. After the hanging she was buried, along with the other conspirators, next to the gallows in the yard of the Old Arsenal prison. Eventually, her body was released to her family and she was interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington DC. For almost 100 years her grave was marked by the headstone on the left. In the 1970’s, the tombstone was broken and was replaced by the tombstone on the right. The original tombstone is owned by the Surratt House Museum.
