In 1877 he and his family moved to Anderson County, Kansas. The trip to Kansas was made in the customary way at the time by, by covered wagon. Upon his arrival to Kansas, he bought a quarter section of L.L. & G. Railroad land in the south end of Union Township just outside of Garnett. Martin was cited as being a day laborer in the Financial Statement of his wife's medical report and his financial condition at that time was listed as 'poor'. Born to him were six sons, Walter Martin, Jay Clark, Eugene Nathaniel, Stephen H., Ely and Fred. Fred died as an infant and was buried with his parents. Ely was sick with Consumption so Martin took him to California to try and improve Ely's condition. Ely died there (see Ely's photo below).
