Major Aaron Hawley 1739-1803

The tombstone reads: In his turn received the Shaft of Dath, July 21st, 1803 in 63rd year of his age, and was here deposited in hopes of a glorious Resurrection. Man needs but little, nor that little long, How soon must he resign his very dust, Which frugal nature lent him for an hour.

Major Aaron Hawley, son of James Hawley, was born in 1739, at Stratford, and died July 21, 1803. He was a farmer at Bridgeport. He lived in the old red house on the Hawley place from 1787 to 1803 at which period the 'up-right highway' (Main Street - MAP) was widened and the site of the famous well in front, which stood its width upon the street, was excepted and liberty was given to fence around it. The same well exists today covered by the sidewalk stone. The house was bequeathed to his son Captain Samuel. He married, November 24, 1759. Elizabeth, daughter of Captain Ezra and Abigail (Hall) hawley; she was born in 1732, and died July 8, 1776. He married (second) July 10, 1777, Sarah Comstock, born November 12, 1747, died May 3, 1786, daughter of John and Deborah (Welch) Comstock. He married (third) Rachel Pickett.

Aaron Hawley was the Revolutionary War in the battles of Long Island and White Plains and served in the Burgoyne campaign. When honorably discharged in 1781 he was a brigade major under General Gold Selleck Silliman.
