John Hawley II
John Hawley II was born in Orleans County, New York, April 17, 1817. He moved to Springfield, Bradford County, Pennsylvania and married Jerusha Cleveland, January 1, 1840. They became parents of seven children: five boys and two girls (listed below). Six of the seven children attained adult age and married. They lived in Pennsylvania 14 years and moved to Lawton/Porter, Michigan in 1854, where they lived on the same farm the balance of their lives, having been married more than fifty seven years. John died June 20, 1897 at 80 years of age. Jerusha sold the farm only a few weeks prior to her decease and went to North Muskegon to live with her son Atwell. They are both interred at the Lawton Cemetery. John's parents were John Hawley I and Betsey M. Hawley.

Jerusha B. Cleveland, wife of John Hawley II, was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, March 3, 1819 and died at North Muskegan, Michigan January 25, 1899, at nearly 80 years of age. She was active in the suffrage movement. She is descended from Moses Cleveland and was related to President Grover Cleveland. Jerusha's parents were Daniel Cleveland and Clarrissa Ely.

  • Atwell married Lydia
  • Sophronia married Daniel Salisbury
  • John Montgomery (III) married Mary Ann Hackett

Moving to Lawton, Michigan
When John and Jerusha left Pennsylvania to move to Michigan, it was said that they traveled by train. Below is the picture of the train station in Lawton, Michigan where they would have arrived in the 1850's. The station is still there today:

1873 Plat Map Porter Michigan Highlighted are John Hawley and Eugene Hawley's homesteads. Martin Hawley lived directly west (Phillips property in 1873) of John but had already left for Iowa.
