Jehiel Hawley 1685-1727

Jehiel Hawley, son of Samuel Sr. and father of Samuel Stowe Hawley, was born April 5, 1685, in Stratford, Connecticut. He was a hatter by trade and settled in Durham, Connecticut. He married Hope Stowe, of Middletown, Connecticut, December 13, 1708, and seems to have moved to Middletown until his decease in July 19, 1727. It is mentioned in the Connecticut town records pre 1870 (link right) that he drowned in the Connecticut River.

Hope was born October 31, 1694, in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut and was daughter of Ichabod Stow and Mary Atwater. She died January 23, 1763, in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. Burial was at the Old North Burying Grounds, Middlefield, Middlesex, Connecticut.

Administration was granted to the widow, Hope Hawley, on the estate of her late husband, Jehiel Hawley, Sept 5, 1727, and the inventory was exhibited to the Court by her, May 7, 1728; and so on April 13, 1730, she was empowered to take the guardianship of her children: Hope aged ten years; Samuel, seven; and Hannah, four.

The following peculiar memoranda are found on the Records of Middletown, CT, concerning the widow Hope (Stowe) Hawley: Middletown, Conn, Town Votes - Fol. 2, p. 151: April 1, 1728 "At the same meeting the town axcepted or Granted to the widow hope Hawley, Liberty to Let her dwelling hous that part of it which stands on the highway, to stand so Long as the same hous stands, provided she pay as an acknowledgement one Indian corn pr year every year to the town clerk as the sd hous stands." "Memorandum of the payment of one Indian Corn per year, by the Widow Hope Hawley as obliged by her Grant Entered in the 151 page of this book. 1729 through 1734 Rec'd pr Joseph Rockwell, T Clerk 1735 Rec'd pr Jabez Hamlin, T Clerk 1736 through 1748 Rec'd pr William rockwell, T Clerk "the Widow Says the house is fell down."
